- Printer: A standard printer will work. I use an old, very cheap HP inkjet that I got on sale for $22 many years ago. Here is a similar version.

How to Print on Sticky Notes: Step-by-Step Instructions
Printing on sticky notes is way easier than you think. Follow these step by step instructions, take your time, and in no time you’ll know exactly how to print on sticky notes! If you prefer, you can watch the how to print on sticky notes video linked below!
- Prepare Your File:
- Choose Your Design: Select a pre-designed template or create your own using digital design software (you can use Canva or Adobe Express).
- Print Settings: Set your printer to print at actual size. You can usually find this setting in the window that pops up when you click print.
- Print the Template:
- This might look like a sheet with some empty squares for sticky note placement. For my printable sticky notes, I like to print the full sheet with the design on it as as the template. For one, it makes things simple. And two, you can fully see that your design will print on the sticky note.
- Place Sticky Notes:
- Peel Carefully: This will be easier to notice in the video that you can watch at the end of this post. You want to gently peel the sticky notes from the pad, pulling them from the side to avoid curling. This ensures they adhere properly.
- Align Accurately: Place the sticky notes on top of the printed paper, ensuring they align with the printed design from the template in step 2.
- Print on Sticky Notes:
- Feed Direction: Pay attention to your printer’s feed direction. The sticky side of the note should face the printer’s rollers. This will prevent jams. Your printer will have symbols on it (usually arrows and document icons) to explain the feed direction and whether it’s face up or face down. If you’re unsure, check your owner’s manual!
- Print Again: Now that you have your template loaded with blank sticky notes back in the printer, send it through the printer a second time. Just click print to print the design onto the sticky notes.
- Peel and Use:
- Gently Peel: Carefully peel the printed sticky notes from the paper, using the same method from step 3 to avoid curling.
- Apply to Planner: Stick the notes to your planner or any other surface.

Tips for Success:
These extra tips and tricks for how to print on sticky notes will help you get it right. Pretty soon you’re going to be making DIY sticky notes for your planner!
- Avoid Fingerprints: Minimize touching the sticky side of the notes to prevent oil buildup, which can reduce adhesion. I’ve been using some of the same sticky notes for months and months, transferring to different pages often. Avoiding curling (see step 3 above) and not touching the sticky strip are the 2 most important tips for keeping your sticky notes sticky.
- Experiment with Colors: While white sticky notes are popular, you can use colorful sticky notes to add a touch of personality to your planner. There are some really cool color options on Amazon, and you could find some that match the color code in your planner!
- Consider Cardstock: While totally optional, you could print your template on cardstock to keep it sturdy if you plan on printing the same sticky note file often. Then you don’t have to print the template over and over again, which saves time and ink. Super simple!
- Consider Laser Printers: Laser printers often produce sharper, more durable prints on sticky notes. I don’t currently have a laser printer, but I’ve used one before without trouble.
- Organize Your Printed Notes: Store them in a file folder or a dedicated sticky note holder. I like to keep a few on the inside cover of my planner for easy access.
