Life as a mom can be crazy! Between managing the kids, the house, and maybe even work, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly running behind. If you’re like me, you’re looking for simple ways to get organized and you have likely already tried a few things. Well, time blocking might be just what you need to feel more in control, without adding more stress to your plate.

What is Time Blocking?
Time blocking is simply scheduling your day in advance. Instead of just having a to-do list, you assign specific blocks of time for each task. Think of it like making appointments with yourself. This isn’t about creating a rigid, inflexible schedule, but rather a guide to help you stay focused and make the most of your time.
Why is Time Blocking Perfect for Busy Moms?
- Reduces Overwhelm: Seeing your day laid out can make it feel less chaotic. You know what you need to do and when, so you’re not constantly trying to juggle everything in your head.
- Boosts Productivity: When you have a dedicated time for a task, you’re more likely to focus and get it done. No more starting one thing, then getting distracted by another!
- Creates Structure: Even if things don’t go exactly as planned (and let’s be real, they rarely do with kids!), having a structure helps you get back on track more easily.
- Improves Focus: Time blocking helps you minimize distractions. When it’s “time to work on that project,” you’re less likely to get sidetracked by social media or other tasks.
- Helps you manage your time: By allocating time blocks to different activities, you’ll be aware of how you spend your time.
Time Blocking with Your Erin Condren Vertical LifePlanner
Your Erin Condren planner is perfect for time blocking! Here’s how to make it work for you:
Divide Your Day
The vertical layout is already set up to divide your day. Think about your typical day and break it down into blocks: morning, afternoon, and evening are a great start. I like to use the lined section at the bottom to note what we’re having for dinner each day.

Identify Your “Must-Dos”
This is key! For each time block, choose ONE thing that’s a must-do to accomplish. This could be anything from “work on home project” to “grocery shopping” to “spend quality time with kids.”
Schedule Your Must-Dos
Write your must-dos into the corresponding time blocks in your planner.

Add Other Tasks
If you have other tasks on your to do list, fit them around your must-dos. But remember, the must-do is the priority.

Be Realistic
Don’t try to cram too much into one day. It’s better to schedule less and actually get it done than to over-schedule and feel defeated.
Be Flexible
Life happens! If something comes up, don’t stress. Just adjust your blocks as needed. The point is to have a plan, not to be chained to it.
The Power of the Must-Do Method
Focusing on the Must-Do task in each time block is a game-changer. It helps you:
- Feel Productive: Even if you don’t get everything on your list done, you’ll feel accomplished knowing you tackled the most important thing.
- Stay in Control: You’re directing your day, rather than feeling like it’s directing you.
- Reduce Mental Load: Knowing your priorities are scheduled frees up mental space for other things.
